LoongArch is a 64-bit RISC instruction-set architecture created by China’s Loongson Technology in 2021 to provide a fully indigenous alternative to x86, Arm, and classic MIPS. It underpins the latest Loongson processors—such as the 3A6000 desktop CPU and the low-power 2K series—and has already been adopted in Linux, GCC/LLVM, and mainstream open-source software stacks. To nurture a developer ecosystem around this new ISA, universities and research institutes across China take part in the annual Loongson Cup (“龙芯杯”), a contest that challenges students to port operating systems, optimize compilers, design peripheral IP, and build innovative applications on LoongArch development boards. The competition doubles as both a talent pipeline for the domestic chip industry and a showcase of what the young architecture can achieve.
